Socioeconomic research & project management:
This section is responsible for the collection and analysis of socio-economic fisheries data along with economic data pertaining to the aquaculture and processing industries. The respective officers also manage the ongoing EU funded and nationally funded research projects which are being carried out by Aquatic Resources Malta.
Marine biology & conservation:
The live feed section is divided into three main sections, all equipped to produce microalgae, rotifers and artemia. The seawater in this section is sand filtered, 1 micron filtered, and UV filtered. Microalgae are produced in flasks and plastic bags, with different sizes up to approximately 400L.
Rotifers can be grown and enriched in 1m squared conical fibreglass tanks under controlled environmental conditions. Nine of these tanks are available.
Artemia can be hatched and enriched in 1m squared tanks. For both artemia and rotifer sections, a number of 80L conical free-standing tanks are available for smaller scale trial experiments.
Data analytics & reporting:
The main remit of this section pertains to the collation, review, aggregation and submission of multifaceted spatio-temporal fisheries and aquaculture data. Our commitment to accuracy and clarity ensures that national and regional stakeholders have the information they need to make informed decisions and achieve their goals.
Aquaculture research & development:
The ongoing and upcoming aquaculture research projects are developed within this section, where we are dedicated to advancing sustainable and innovative practices in the aquaculture industry. We focus on developing efficient breeding, nutrition, and disease management techniques to improve the health and productivity of aquatic species.
Through rigorous research, we strive to optimize aquaculture systems, ensuring environmental responsibility and economic viability. Our commitment to excellence drives us to collaborate with industry partners, stakeholders, and academic institutions.

This section works hand in hand with the Aquaculture Research & Development section which assists in the implementation of these projects. We are dedicated to providing comprehensive support for a wide range of scientific and technical projects.

Aquatic Resources Malta’s education outreach program in fisheries and aquaculture aims to inspire and educate the next generation about the vital role of aquatic ecosystems. Through interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and expert-led seminars, we provide students and community members with a deep understanding of sustainable fishing practices, aquaculture techniques, and the importance of conserving marine biodiversity.
